Eta Mu earned recognition for philanthropy while raising nearly $6,000 and volunteering with Special Olympics.
The chapter brought home intramural championships in both kickball and softball.
These standards have guided Sigma Chi recruitment since 1855—and continue to guide Eta Mu today.

Significant Sig · Eta Mu ’87
From quarterback at Eastern Illinois to Super Bowl winning coach, Brother Sean Payton has carried the Eta Mu story far beyond Charleston. Sigma Chi recognized him with its Significant Sig Award for achievement in his profession.

Brother Ryan Pace played defensive end for Eastern Illinois from 1996–99 before beginning his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints in 2001. He advanced from operations assistant through the scouting and personnel ranks, ultimately serving as director of player personnel and contributing to the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV championship organization.
Pace served as general manager of the Chicago Bears from 2015–21, held senior personnel leadership roles with the Atlanta Falcons from 2022–25, and joined the Minnesota Vikings as a football advisor in 2026.

A founding member of Sigma Chi’s Eta Mu Chapter at Eastern Illinois University, Brother Maris received Sigma Chi’s Significant Sig Award in 2020. EIU also honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2023.
Brother Maris built a career in medicine and served our country for 34 years, retiring as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. His service to others and lifelong connection to EIU make Eta Mu proud to call him a brother.
Significant Sig · Eta Mu ’73 · 2017
A founding brother and early consul of Eta Mu, Tom Long helped establish Sigma Chi at Eastern Illinois University. He went on to a distinguished legal career in Illinois and remained active in civic life.
Sigma Chi honored him as a Significant Sig in 2017, and EIU recognized him as a Distinguished Alumnus. His leadership helped lay the foundation for the brotherhood Eta Mu carries forward today.

Dr. Kevin Klauer has built a career caring for patients and leading organizations that support physicians and improve health care. An emergency physician, he has served as CEO of the American Osteopathic Association and in senior medical leadership roles at TeamHealth and HCA Florida.
Sigma Chi honored Brother Klauer with the Significant Sig Award in 2020. Eta Mu is proud to recognize his achievements and the example he sets for future generations of brothers.

Brother Paul Ward has spent his career guiding universities through complex legal matters, serving in senior counsel and leadership roles at the University of South Carolina, Arizona State University, and Southern Methodist University.
A respected leader in higher education law, he was named a Significant Sig in 2012 and elected a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation in 2019. Eta Mu is proud to recognize his professional achievement and service to higher education.

Brother Jim Getz helped establish Eta Mu at Eastern Illinois University. He went on to a distinguished career in conservation law enforcement and boating safety, serving in leadership roles with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and training investigators in recreational boating accidents.
Sigma Chi inducted Jim into the Order of Constantine in 2005 and named him a Significant Sig in 2019. Eta Mu is proud to recognize both his professional achievements and his role in founding our chapter.
